History of the image titled “Cold War” by Carl Chaplin
Iteration 1
Wax pencil
18 inch diameter on 30×30 illustration board
“Cold War” (Iteration 1) was first painted in 1975 to help Paul Watson (then with Greenpeace) in the historic campaign against the seal hunt.
Money from the auction of the original was donated to the campaign. Posters and a limited edition were made from the painting and distributed worldwide. The design and lettering on the poster were by Barry Lavender (famous for his “Raiders of the Lost Arc” logo).
To our regret thirty-five years later the campaign has not reached its goal of stopping the hunt completely. Still deeply concerned over the fate of these marine mammals Carl has painted a new updated version of this classic. And Barry Lavender has also updated the lettering for the new poster.
Iteration 2
Airbrushed acrylic and pencil
13 inch diameter on 17×19 Epson’s Ultra Smooth Fine Art paper
This new painting will be on display in Vancouver, B.C. during March and April. Write for locations.
Posters, cards and digital files are now available via email.
