On behalf of my lovely wife Shastah and myself I want to take this moment to thank everyone who made our trip to the 24th annual George Orwell dinner in Victoria, B.C. a reality.

Travel from our relatively remote area of the province to the island is expensive and it was only due to the generosity of those who donated funds that we were able to attend this important gathering of free speech advocates from across Canada.

This was the second time that we were able to enjoy the fellowship of people on the front lines of those fighting to retain the right to speak out their truths in the face of a brutal and alarmingly dangerous force: the government of Canada and its bureaucratic agent known as the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC).

Due to time restrictions at the moment I cannot elaborate on the meeting but will do so over the next while.

A June 24, 2009 letter by Cal Mahan of Calgary to the Calgary Herald, appearing under the byline “Find someone new” and in response to the paper’s June 21st Editorial, “CHRC seeks more powers,” stated:

“This editorial is an updated rehash of the Feb. 13 editorial “Would-be censor seeks red pencil” and other single-minded opinion pieces. The poster boys remain the same – Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant – two unsympathetic propagandists and bullies.
Can’t you find a more attractive victim of the witch-hunting human rights commissions, who would elicit more general public affinity for your otherwise media-centric cause?”

In many respects Mahan’s comments epitomized, in two pithy sentences, the reality of Canada’s mainstream media and its current one-sided, circumscribed perspective on the issue of freedom of speech in Canada and who will be given a platform to express their perspective on this highly contentious subject. In allowing only the poster boys Levant and Steyn to monopolize this debate within the pages of the Zionist-owned media the obvious bias is showing through. The fact that the same two rogues from out of the gallery of the human rights commission’s victims are inevitably given this privilege on a regular basis doesn’t sit well with many who see the cozy set-up that appears to exist between certain ethnic/religious groups and their counterparts in the media.

It also got me thinking about my own situation with respect to this issue of who gets to be highlighted by the media and who doesn’t. In the case of myself and my website RadicalPress.com it’s now been just over two years since Harry Abrams, B.C. representative for the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada along with his co-complainant Anita Bromberg, formally laid a complaint[1] with the Canadian Human Rights Commission under the notorious Section 13(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act seeking “relief” for contended “discriminatory” publication of articles which they felt contrived “to promote ongoing hatred affecting persons identifiable as Jews and/or as citizens of Israel.”

Since receiving word of the complaint it’s become a full time profession for me trying to stave off this blatant attempt to silence my thoughts and opinions on an issue of public interest (Zionist politics) that is growing in leaps and bounds with each passing day.

Write a Letter for Freedom of Speech!

Dear Free Speech Lover,

I, Arthur Topham and my website www.RadicalPress.com are in the midst of a legal battle with the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada over the issue of freedom of speech.

On November 20, 2007 I received confirmation from the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) that the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada (BBC) and its British Columbia representative, Harry Abrams, had co-joined to file a “complaint” with the CHRC on August 14, 2007 citing the infamous “Section 13” of the Canadian Human Rights Act, a specious and vague piece of legislation which states:

13. (1) It is a discriminatory practice for a person or a group of persons acting in concert to communicate telephonically or to cause to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, any matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination. [bold mine]

As this legislation was not all-inclusive enough for the “entrapment” purposes which the Zionist lobbies had in mind, immediately following the 9/11 attack and Canada’s hastily formulated Anti-terrorism Act, c.41 (passed December 18th, 2001) they were able to successfully lobby for the additional inclusion into Sec. 13(1) of the following “Interpretation(2)” which reads:

Interpretation
 (2) For greater certainty, subsection (1) applies in respect of a matter that is communicated by means of a computer or a group of interconnected or related computers, including the Internet, or any similar means of communication, but does not apply in respect of a matter that is communicated in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a broadcasting undertaking.  [bold mine]

This Interpretation(2) of Sec. 13(1) was precisely what the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada and the Canadian Jewish Congress were waiting for. Now they had the legal pretext within which they could begin their assault upon any individual or group or website which they felt was a threat to the national interests of the state of Israel or its ideology, Zionism.

Using Section 13(1) and its Interpretation(2), B’nai Brith Canada stated in its complaint to the CHRC:

“The premise of this complaint is a contention that Arthur Topham and Radicalpress.com contrive to promote ongoing hatred affecting persons identifiable as Jews and/or as citizens of Israel.” [bold is mine]

In other words, these Jewish Lobby groups feel that it should be a “hate crime” to criticize a the foreign nation known as Israel. That is the unique precedent they are hoping to establish in this complaint to the CHR Commission.

The basis for the B’nai Brith Canada complaint was a series of 18 articles posted on RadicalPress.com. For purposes of this request I am short-listing an assortment of those cited below. The complaint was accepted by the CHRC and has moved through a series of stages culminating in a decision to pass it on to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT). Thanks to Sec. 13(1) and its Interpretation(2) these two quasi-judicial bodies – the commission and tribunal – now form what is, in essence, the yin and yang of Canada’s latest instrument of Internet censorship – one initially and supposedly designed to protect the rights of visible minorities and handicapped workers in the labour market – but now, thanks to 9/11 and the legal machinations of the pro-Zionist Lobby groups in Canada like B’nai Brith Canada, the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Simon Weisenthal Center, these two former bureaucratic organizations have shape-shifted into a lethal weapon designed to kill, via coercive, unjust legislation, Canada’s supreme right to freedom of speech on the net.

The current Tribunal stage involves holding a public hearing during which the complainant(s) and the respondent (myself and RadicalPress.com) will be given the opportunity to present our respective arguments.

As part of my defense I will be presenting a portfolio of letters from Internet users, both in Canada and around the world, who support the inherent right of all Canadians to freedom of speech on the Internet.

It goes without saying that the Internet, being an anarchic construct from its inception, knows neither centralized authority nor national boundaries thus providing an open and accessibility global forum and library in terms of freedom of information and the ability to express ones opinions in an atmosphere of neutrality and non-coercion.

But this once sacred domain is no longer safe and without immediate action by the blogosphere and Internet users in general its fate is to become more and more restricted and controlled by the Zionist forces now in control of all the rest of the world’s mainstream media.

Time is of the essence. I have until March 20th, 2009 to submit a Statement of Particulars to the Tribunal which is a description of the material facts that I intend to use in support of my arguments to have this vexatious charge thrown out. An important part of that evidence will be the letters of support submitted in my favour and in support of freedom of speech on the net.

So please, if you are concerned about this imminent threat to Internet censorship and the loss of freedom of speech in Canada then please take the time to scan the articles being attacked by B’nai Brith Canada, as well as others that are on the RadicalPress.com website and if you disagree with Sec. 13(1) then please write a letter to the Tribunal stating so.

Also, it is very important that you send me a cc copy of your letter at radical@radicalpress.com . It should be understood that in writing such a letter one ought to be civil and refrain from excessive and aggressive language. I will, in turn, use them in my struggle to help defeat this attack upon our most basic and cherished right as human beings living in a free society.

Monday, July 16th, 2007 will not be a date that will live in infamy. Not at least within the marbled corridors and high haunts of the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC) editorial board.

Listening to the Beeb’s World Service radio dispatches, aired on the hour, the two massive earthquakes that struck Japan, destroying hundreds of buildings, killing nine at last count, and injuring more than a thousand people rated only a fourth story position in the six minute, eight news item segment.

This despite the marginally pertinent fact of the natural disaster: The trembler proved too much for the local nuclear power plant, triggering fires, a spill of radioactive water, and the venting of radioactive gases.

Rather than lead the news with this, the B.B.C. editors decided to bang further their seeming constant drum beat for a broader war with Iran.

Reuters now reports, more than 10,000 people in Kashiwazaki, Japan are sheltering in evacuation centres in the wake of yesterday’s 6.8 earthquake, and aftershocks are still rocking the area.

The Beeb might be forgiven for not kenning the seriousness of the situation yesterday, (preferring to air their elaborate agit-prop piece blasting Iran’s mullahs), as Japanese officials had then only admitted to a “litre and a half” spillage of radioactive material from the seven-reactor Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear complex, the planet’s largest; but today, with the official admission that: The plant was not designed to withstand a 6.8 Richter scale quake; a hundred barrels containing nuclear waste were overturned and burst; 1200, not 1 and a half, litres of contaminated radioactive waste was released into the sea; and, a cloud of nuclear steam (cobalt-60, iodine and chromium-51) too was released into the atmosphere, the story still barely rated better than it did the day before.

Today the Japan earthquake item on the BBC followed yet another car bombing in Iraq, and the British government’s sabre rattling with Russia over the failure of that country to allow extradition of a man, ironically enough, they charge murdered another Russian with a radioactive isotope.

Reacting to the disaster and how it was managed, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe complained about the company’s slow reporting of the spills, saying;

“Nuclear power plants can only be operated with the trust of the people.”

Adding;

“For this, if something happens they need to report on it thoroughly and quickly.”

“Knowledge is power.” So goes the often heard, and generally accepted, aphorism.

Consequently, powerful people who would like to maintain and consolidate their power will endeavor to control and manipulate information. One step in achieving control of information is through the media. When complete media control is not possible, then silencing rival media is also effective. In Canada, this silencing of dissident voices can be attempted, strange as it seems, through the Canadian Human Rights Council (CHRC).

Control need only be exerted in a society where those wielding power do not wield it on the behalf of the masses. Despots rely on information manipulation, propaganda, and lies. Since neoliberalism and Zionism benefit only a tiny segment of society, neoliberals and Zionists are compelled to control the information sources to hide the crimes of their ideology from the masses.

The corporate media reflects a worldview acceptable to the media owners. That the news and opinions present a distorted, biased, and selective view has been richly documented. Yet, neoliberals, who manage to dominate the governments in many western countries through lesser-evilism politics, have abetted and acquiesced to a consolidation of the monopoly media. 1 This has allowed systematization of a manufactured consent on vital issues. Views not amenable to corporate media ownership are either marginalized or buried. 2

It is not surprising, therefore that, out of this morass of corporatist propaganda and disinformation (that is collaborative in ethnic cleansing, racism, classism, and genocide), an independent media would be welcomed and garner a growing segment of public readership and viewership. 3

The progressivist media provide an independent voice in a world where victims of neoliberalism, imperialism, and classism can be heard. This voice must not be silenced by Zionist or corporate thuggery.

Stifling Free Speech

In Canada, the Jewish advocacy group B’nai Brith has been at the forefront of staving off any criticism of Israel, deserved or not. Thus, B’nai Brith has backed a Camosack (colonial designation: Victoria) businessman, Harry Abrams, who lodged a complaint with the CHRC against the Canada-based Peace Earth and Justice News website.

B’nai Brith Canada calls itself “the action arm of the Jewish community.” It claims to believe in fighting anti-Semitism and “promoting human rights and peace throughout the world.” One wonders about B’nai Brith’s promotion of human rights when it comes to Palestinians. For instance, it opposes the right-of-return for Palestinian refugees saying this would lead to the destruction of the Jewish state. This contradicts B’nai Brith’s statement: “We applaud Israel as a vibrant society that respects the civil, religious and cultural rights of all its citizens.” 4 Given that Arabs are a fifth of Israel’s population, it is disingenuous to declare a respect for all citizens, especially those victims of ethnic cleansing who still live as refugees.

Clearly, B’nai Brith is not interested in human rights for all. It is openly segregationist and only advocating on behalf of Jews. Hence, it attempts to censure facts and views, whether truthful or not, that it considers inflammatory toward public perceptions of Israel.

The CHRC says it has received a complaint against the Prometheus Institute, which runs PEJ News, that alleges it “is discriminating against person or groups of persons by communicating messages on the Internet that are likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt on the basis of national or ethnic origin, contrary to section 13(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.”

An investigation is now ongoing into the complaint.

In Canada, new lows of submission to Jews were reached, as human rights organization (in our view, usually a stooge of former) attacked a Canadian anti-Zionist environmentalist site. Probably it could be expected in the country where all media belong to their tiny Jewish minority, in the country that kept Zundel for two years in jail before shipping him to Germany. On the other hand, the same can be said about any western state.

I did write to you recently, letting you know that B’nai Brith Canada is now attacking our Victoria, Canada-based non-profit website, Peace Earth and Justice News, www.pej.org , through the Canadian Human Rights Commission. A complaint was launched by local B’nai Brith representative, Harry Abrams, who has selected 18 articles, 6 of which were posted by me. A while back, I wrote to you asking permission to repost your articles at PEJ. Since then I have posted a number of your articles there. Now one of the articles in question which I posted was written by you! The others I posted were written by Virginia Tilley and Bill and Kathleen Christinson, as well as Jostein Gaarder’s excellent piece, “God’s Chosen People.”

Of course, I stand by ALL of the hundreds of articles I have posted there, and I also stand by the excellent articles which were posted by Chris Cook (now editor of the www.pacificfreepress.com website) which are being challenged. I have no fear going into this, and I recognize that any consciencious progressive Peace and Human Rights writer will inevitably end up with an anti-semitism charge.

Unfortunately, other colleagues at PEJ, while claiming that they are not intimidated and that we will continue to publish articles which expose the Israeli atrocity, are freaking out about this, and fear that they “will lose their houses,” and seem eager to kow-tow and find a ‘mediated solution’ to this debacle, while Chris and I want to take this head-on, without any repentence. I tested the waters recently and posted M. Shahid Alam’s excellent recent article, “Chosenness and Exceptionalism” for which I have now been fired from my position as volunteer editor. Apparently, PEJ will no longer tolerate the posting of any articles which are critical of Israel now.

Apparently, B’nai Brith and Harry Abrams have been very successful in so easily intimidating and shutting down a once-progressive discussion.

Chris Cook of the University of Victoria Gorilla Radio (GO-rilla, as in, our furry friends or cousins… or descendants, depending on your evolutionary perspective and level of optimism about the human race) writes:

“For American readers who value and feel protected by the First Amendment (right to free speech), it may seem strange that a country would enshrine in law the opposite condition; but Hate Crime legislation in this country is widely supported. Canada is an ethnically and politically diverse country, consisting of minority populations from the world over, and it was deemed fair-minded to ensure all are protected from the “tyranny of the majority.” But it’s a double-edged sword, making possible an abuse of the statutes, allowing an equally odious tyranny, the stifling of dissent and criticism by a dedicated minority.”

Cook’s problem is that one edge of this sword just fell on a web-site he edits, the Peace, Earth and Justice News, “a non-profit, all-volunteer, non-hierarchical media organization” based in Victoria whose mission (as described in its Constitution) is to report on “climate change and other environmental issues, war and peace in the Middle East, Afghanistan and elsewhere, and human rights and other matters of social justice.”

PEJ has been operating since 1996 and is owned by the small (annual budget of a few hundred dollars and all volunteer staff), non-profit Prometheus Institute, British Columbia, where Cook was a senior editor until February this year.

On May 17 PEJ publisher Alan Rycroft received a letter from the Canadian Human Rights Commission, signed by the deputy secretary general Richard Tardiff, claiming that PEJ had violated Canadian law by posting anti-Semitic material, according to a complaint filed with its legal department by Harry Abrams, a Victoria businessman and British Columbia representative for the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith, Canada, which joins him in the complaint.

PEJ publishes materials from activists around the world, including some who have published on American websites like Counterpunch and Dissident Voice. It is an alternative paper that by definition carries news not covered in the mainstream press and those stories are naturally controversial, often criticizing the actions of powerful entities, including governments. It is the best of times, and worst. Not since the banking crisis of the 1930′s, now known as ‘The Great Depression,’ has the global situation looked so grim, its challenges seeming intractably insolvable.

The media daily informs of impending ecological collapse, and the peril posed by terrorists, determined to destroy “our freedoms,” while salving the public’s growing apprehension with assurances of a buoyant economy whose perpetual growth requires we only keep faith. These apparently contradictory messages utilize a single device, designed to serve a single purpose: Fear and its inculcation to become the preeminent force ruling human existence.

What the press will not reveal is the correlative connecting the dying throes of industrial civilization with its profound despoiling of the natural world, and the systemic injustice of capitalism, creating the desperate conditions fostering armed resistance; globally known as “terrorism,” and locally called “crime.”

Instead of addressing the crux of the matter, today’s corporate media, a small group of cross-invested, trans-national entities, cannot both serve the public interest and tell the truth without compromising the charter obligations to their share-holders: Maximum profit first and last. This because, a free and informed public would not countenance the escalating brutality required to maintain the status quo.

Or at least, one would hope, if not for Humanity’s sake, common sense would prevail the perverse ambitions of those currently sitting atop the global power paradigm, recognizing a just and financially equitable distribution of the planet’s bounty ultimately profits us all best.

But clearly, we are neither free, nor informed by the capital “M” media.

[Editor's Note: It's high time for some Gonzo commentary. From my comments the astute reader will note that I am just a tab pissed with this latest attack upon human rights! This nauseating pile of stinking shit that the Zionist Jews here in Canada are creating in order to shut down or shut up free sites like http://www.PEJ.org has got to STOP! Sites that have the courage and common sense to criticize the Zionist Jews and the 'state' of Israel have got to be supported and backed and an aggressive offensive stance must be initiated and fought tooth and nail by everyone in this country who values freedom of expression and freedom of thought.

I've worked with Al Rycroft for years and, of late, Chris Cook, and they are two fine, upstanding Canadians who are considerate, decent human beings concerned about the dire state of human affairs and the environment both locally and globally.

Anyone in this day and age who seriously is concerned with social justice and who does his or her work in terms of research will ultimately come up with the same conclusions that those writers who were featured on Rycroft's news site did. The vast extent of Jewish power and influence in the media, in national governments throughout the world and in the sphere of financial institutions is so blatantly obvious that it begs the question as to why the world hasn't awoke to the fact. Control of the means of communication is obviously the key to keeping the people stupid.

Thanks to the web these power-crazed Zionist psychopaths are being exposed big time and they're desperate in their attempts to silence any websites that are spotlights them and shines the light of truth on their nefarious and dark agenda for global control of mankind.

All this shit about racism and anti-Semites and hatred is nothing but a fucking lie and a red herring that the Zionist Jews have been baiting the public with for the last century. Years of research has proven to me that these phoney bastards have been bamboozling the general public for so long with their "by way of deception" tactics and their "power of the purse" that they actually believing their own lies.

These Zionists don't understand basic human dignity and real human rights. All they want is to use the organizations that they've created here in Canada i.e. the Canadian Human Rights Commission, et cetera in order to shut anyone up who doesn't agree with the aims and agenda of these Zionist maniacs. The news is out: I’m a hate-filled, anti-semitic, racist. That according to a typically one-sided assessment of the case of Hate Crimes charges emanating from one Harry Abrams, and his colleagues at the British Columbia branch of the B’nai Brith written up in “Canada’s national newspaper,” The Globe and Mail

I wrote about the case in these pages last week, and though Sid Tafler, the author of the Globe item, and self-confessed Israel supporter, didn’t bother to call me, he did cite a couple of my articles. So, I’ll check my inclination to criminal bias, and reproduce his piece as it appears in today’s G$M below, but before doing so will let you know, as Sid doesn’t make it clear: The society in question does not accept the charge of racism, and will contest it with the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

As the bombs continue to fall over Palestine, the bodies piling higher by the hour, I’m spending my weekend (thanks to Queen Victoria, a mercifully long one) reading over 18 “offending” articles published at my former home Peace, Earth, and Justice
( www.PEJ.org ).

I’m doing this because, Canada has Hate Speech laws, and me and PEJ have apparently fallen afoul of them. Or, so says the British Columbia branch of the B’nai Brith organization.

Considering the hundreds of articles chronicling the crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli regime in Palestine, Lebanon, and elsewhere published during my time as an editor at PEJ, I can only remark at my shock B’nai Brith could only come up with 18 they find offensive. Perhaps it’s a softening of vigilance, or maybe a tacit recognition: Israeli government policy is becoming increasingly difficult to defend, even among its most staunch proponents?

Nevertheless, the charges are serious for the PEJ.org board members, the editors (of which yours truly is one), and the authors of the articles in question, some of the most noted authorities on the six decades-long Palestine-Israel debacle.

Yes, many of the men** crossing the t’s, and dotting the i’s on the blueprints of carnage from distant bunkers beneath a distant Capitol are wholly unaware of days held by dusky foreigners in reverence, and merely drop their bombs with no more thought than to the effect on their missiles of the prevailing wind. And I’m certain too, the ultimate author’s of the orders those bombs fly are totally cognizant of what they do, when they do it, and why.

So these, thought I, are the 28% of the populace willing to send the children of anonymous fellow citizens to their spiritual, and in at least 43 cases, physical doom in foreign adventures. They too must be among the estimated 71,763 Victorians still subscribing to the city’s only daily, CanWest Gloobal organ the Victoria Times-Colonist.

Happily, the lobby of my building contained several extraneous copies of the T-C today, left-over trees, shorn from our [sic] forests, pulped, bleached, and printed with poison ink that we may be informed; lest we forget the price our [sic] society’s continuance demands: Today’s bulletin says that cost is endless slaughter and sacrifice. Be proud of holocausts past and, reminds the rag, be proud to send your sons and daughters into the fires of war burning now in Afghanistan, and the elsewheres the Imperium and its spokespersons like the scandal and blood-tainted Bill Clinton dictate.

Robin Hood is, the consensus of historians agree, merely legend. The merry man in the green leotard is an English archetype, a popular creation, expressing the wishes and frustration of the little people ground beneath the boot of a cruel king and oppressive system that permitted no justice for them. While Robin was only a dream, the hero and bearer of the mantle of their hopes and aspirations for justice, the oppression those distant peasants suffered was not fiction.

Under the Feudal system, the king, or his agents, could kick in the door of any peon’s hovel, drag the unfortunate away, and torture and imprison her forever without charge, or trial. Or, they could simply kill her outright. Neither she nor her family had legal recourse, and any raising objection could expect the same treatment.

This was the reality of life in the twelfth century. And so, around the cook fires and sup tables, a legend of a true and noble knight rising from the forests to waylay the progress of the evil suffered the good and free folk was born; a salve for a bitter and battered people. Robin Hood may never have lived, but the injustice he mythically battled was real.

The unbridled power held in the person of the monarch had become, by the early 13th century, something the Church, feudal Barons, and hoi polloi peasantry, (“stakeholders” in today’s parlance) could no longer countenance. They forced the king’s hand, making John renounce certain crown powers and privilege that the realm could live better in peace through justice. That determination was enshrined in the law of the land in the form of the Magna Carta Libertatum, or Great Charter of Freedoms.
