Did He Who Made the Lamb Make Section 13?

One of my fondest remembrances of passing through high school was the time spent in my Grade 12 English classes. My instructor, an elderly, refined English woman by the name of Mrs. Robertson, was the epitome of all those fine qualities that make up a good teacher and, like myself, she loved English literature and in particular the poets and writers of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

I had a school acquaintance at the time, a social buddy as well, who also enjoyed her classes and we would spend much time composing essays and discussing the finer philosophical points of the many enlightened artists of those days. The image above reminds me of the times that we would spend mulling and disputing and synthesizing our nascent, budding interests in truth and art as expressed in all that was best of the English writers.

One such 18th Century composer of rhyme was William Blake, a fearless visionary and valiant fighter for freedom of expression and spiritual questing. It is he whose immortal words contained in his poem The Tiger and quoted above that now move me today to extrapolate from his thoughts written almost two centuries ago yet as bright and burning in my own soul as they must have been when first forged within the mind of Blake himself.

It’s the issue of freedom of speech or expression. Call it what one will it’s the lifeblood of nation’s character, the spiritual essence that permeates all that a people or a culture can produce as the end-product of its collective consciousness, yet, and as fate would have it, at a time in history when one would imagine that after the effects of the Renaissance period and the Age of Enlightenment and Reason we would by now have progressed as a civilization to stages of democratic and literary growth and freedom where such present realities would have once been deemed contrary to reason and logic, we now find ourselves living in times when this amazing, God-given ability to cogitate and question in the open atmosphere of rightful and peaceful liberty is under dire and imminent threat.

[Editor's Note: It appears that for all of Mr. Harry Abrams' talk about having a great sense of humor he certainly didn't find my humorous comments concerning Nancy Lafontant and Daniel Poulin of the CHR Tribunal and CHR Commission funny at all. In fact he took those innocent, humorous and satirical comments to heart and proceeded to allege to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that I was being insulting and racist and verbally abusive toward these two government employees.

As a result I put together a short rebuttal to his accusations and sent it along to the Tribunal in my defense. It contains a number of cartoons wherein other government employees of much greater stature, such as our illustrious former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, are made fun of in a similar manner by none other than the characters involved in the CBC radio comedy Double Exposure. 

This little attempt to malign me is in reality just another of B'nai Brith's endless attempts at throwing shit in my direction hoping that it will stick and the Tribunal will look down upon me in disdain. The transparency of these acts is crystal clear yet they methodically go about trying to smear me in their effort to make my person and my character fit their preconceived notions contained with section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act.]

RE: Harry Abrams and the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada v. Arthur Topham and the RadicalPress.com

Please find enclosed further evidence to counter the June 23, 2009 allegations made by the Complainants which infer that:

“… to date, nearly all of the communications and correspondences received from Mr. Topham continue to include multiple forms of vituperative racist expression, and not simply  directed towards Jews, Israelis or the complainants in this action, either.

We must protest Mr. Topham’s disgraceful insults, taunts and verbal abuse targeting both Ms. Lafontant and Mr. Poulin for the fact that English is not their first language.”  

Canada, including all Canadians, be they of whatever nationality, race, religion, ethnic origin or whatever, has always maintained a strong tradition of portraying its colorful and diverse population via the medium of political satire. Stretching back into its hoary past to the days of Sir John A. Macdonald when newspapers lavished the public with cartoons of Sir John swaggering about with bottle firmly in hand on and up to the present political figures, ranging from the obscure to the prominent, have not escaped the watchful eye of the observant artist or writer who was able to observe something of humor in the character traits of their recipient victims.

In her 1974 book, The John A. Macdonald Album, Lena Newman writes:

“He was portrayed as an old woman, Sherlock Holmes, the conductor of a symphony orchestra, a Beefeater, a ship’s captain, a doctor, a king, a shoemaker, a fisherman, a naughty schoolboy, Ulysses, an Indian Chief, a hotel bellboy, an actor playing Shakespeare, a unicorn, a circus performer, a policeman Aeneas, a judge, a magician, a fox, a chef, a barber, a flying insect, Sinbad, a mailman – and sometimes even a politician!”

From Newfie jokes to Polack jokes to jokes about Ukrainians Canadians have always enjoyed spoofing and laughing about the peculiar characteristics of specific nationalities. In the case of French Canadians such as Ms. Lafontant and Messr. Daniel Poulin the tradition of copying in script the nuances of their respective speech habits is well established. As a child growing up in Canada and attending school I was treated to the well-known and revered Canadian poet Henry Drummond and thrilled to the escapades of one of his favourite characters Johnnie Courteau.

During the tenure of Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien Canadians were treated to no less a variety of political cartoons and satire that depicted the French-Canadian PM in like manner to that of Sir John A.

In order to illustrate this longstanding Canadian tradition I am enclosing for the Tribunal a number of images containing examples of the very thing which the Complainants, in their questionable efforts to continually slander me, are contending constitute “vituperative racist expression” and “”disgraceful insults, taunts and verbal abuse targeting both Ms. Lafontant and Mr. Poulin for the fact that English is not their first language.”  As will be clearly evident from the examples given my purpose in publishing the comments which I did are in perfect accord with Canadian tradition.

The examples presented here can be found in the book Double Exposure by Linda Cullen & Bob Robertson, Whitecap Books, Vancouver/Toronto and  A Beginner’s Guide to Canadian Humour, edited by Lynette Stokes and Pamela Chichinskas, Eden Press, Montreal.

The back cover of the book above also makes reference to Jean Chretien and his manner of speech.

The above cartoon obviously depicts Irving Feldman, a Jew, in a rather interesting light. Will the Complainants be filing a sec. 13 complaint against CBC now? Will some 1st Nation group be doing likewise?

Here is yet another rather apt cartoon depicting commissioners. Will Mr. Poulin now be filing a sec. 13 complaint against CBC too?

The above cartoon is obviously a disgraceful insult, taunt and verbal abuse of Ukrainians of whom I am a direct descendant. Will I now have grounds to also file a sec. 13 complaint against the CBC?

The final cartoon above portrays the Doukhobors in a rather racist manner. Coming as I do from a Doukhobor background on my mother’s side should I be now giving serious consideration to filing yet another sec. 13 complaint against the CBC?

Given all the above examples (and there are countless more) it’s for reasons such as these I can only state that the Complainants are attempting to grasp at straws in order to do to me what they claim is being done to Ms. Lafontant and Messr. Daniel Poulin. It’s quite clear that their actions in this case speaking much louder than their words.

And so for all of the above I would again ask the Tribunal to not be deceived by the apparent concern on the part of the Complainants that I am somehow to be conceived of as a racist or a hater of people of whatever race or nationality.

In closing and respecting the Complainants transparent attempts to discredit my name with accusations of racism I would harken the Tribunal’s attention back to the following statements contained within your own files.

Warman v Kyburz

Dr. Karen Mock,
Dr. Karen Mock is a child psychologist. According to her profile on her company ( http://www.kanataint.ca/aboutus.html ) website,  Dr. Mock had a 12-year tenure as National Director of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada. From 2001 to 2005, Mock was Executive Director/CEO of  The Canadian Race Relations Foundation. ( http://www.crr.ca/SwitchLang.do?lang=en&cty=EN&section=1&type=1 ) It is this organization which has become the umbrella for ‘Race Relations Councils’. Her list of credentials is long.

Dr. Mock has been accepted as an expert both by the CHRC and the CHRT, her testimony in the Warman v Kyburz case as an “Authority” often cited by both the Tribunal and the CHRC. In para [51] of the Warman v Kyburz case, the Tribunal Chair rendered the following as part of its decision:

[51] As regards Mr. Warman’s allegation that Mr. Kyburz’s messages discriminate against Jews on the basis of race, we note that Dr. Mock testified that Jews are not members of a race, but rather share a common religion. We accept Dr. Mock’s testimony that Mr. Kyburz has, nevertheless, attempted to ‘racialize’ Jews, with his suggestion that their various alleged character flaws are inherited or innate. This is evidenced by his frequent comments about people of their “ilk”, as well as by references to such things as “the real character of the Zionist Jews”. This tactic is perhaps epitomized by the last DIP, with its comment that Zionist Jews will never change, because “…being frauds, criminals, war mongers, pedophiles, anti-life and full of hate is part of them … It is their nature. They will not and cannot change.

The Tribunal made specific emphasis by noting as follows:

” we note that Dr. Mock testified that Jews are not members of a race, but rather share a common religion.”
