Boston: A Harvard Divinity School professor, John Strugnell, was removed this week as chief editor of the Dead Sea Scrolls not only because of his poor health, but because of a tirade against Israel and Judaism, his colleagues said. The remarks, in which he called Judaism “a horrible religion” that “should have disappeared,” came as a surprise to some colleagues working with him to decipher the ancient texts of the Old Testament. Strugnell made the remarks in a recent interview published in Haaretz, a Tel Aviv news-paper. In the Haaretz interview, Strugnell, 60, said he was not against Jews but their religion, according to an account soon to be published in the Biblical Archaeology Review. “I can’t allow the word anti-Semitism to be used,” he is quoted as saying, “Anti-Judaist, that’s what I am.”

It is incorrect to apply it on a universal scale.

This past Yom Kippur, September 25, 1993, my synagogue invited me to explain the afternoon scriptural reading, the list of forbidden sexual liaisons in Leviticus 18. I chose to focus on what is today one of the most frequently quoted passages in the entire Bible, “Do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman, it is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22).

What I said may be both good news and bad news to my Christian friends, depending on their position on gay and lesbian rights. This Biblical prohibition is addressed only to the Jews. Non-Jews are affected only if they reside in the Holy Land, but not elsewhere (see the closing exhortation in Leviticus 18, verses 24-30). Thus, it is incorrect to apply this prohibition on a universal scale.

But I spoke to my fellow Jews, who are required to observe this prohibition. What is the rationale for this prohibition? In a previous column, I noted that the Bible’s impurity rules are part of a symbol system representing the forces of life and death. Israel is required to avoid these impurities and adhere to the laws commanded by God, who promotes the forces of life. Thus in the same chapter we read, “You shall heed my statutes and my rules, by doing them one shall live” (Leviticus 18:5). A man who discharges semen, whether intentionally or otherwise, is declared impure and must purify himself by bathing (a sort of re-baptism) before he is permitted to enter the Temple or touch sacred (sacrificial) food (Leviticus 15:16-18). Why? Because semen stands for life, and the loss of semen symbolizes the loss of life.

Note also that in the entire list of forbidden sexual unions, THERE IS NO PROHIBITION AGAINST LESBIANISM. Can it be that lesbianism did not exist in ancient times or that Scripture was unaware of its existence? Lesbians existed and flourished, as attested in an old (pre-Israelite)

Babylonian text and in the work of the lesbian poet Sappho (born c. 612 B.C.E., during the time of the First Temple), who came from the island of Lesbos (hence lesbianism). But there is a fundamental difference between the homosexual acts of men and women. IN LESBIANISM THERE IS NO SPILLING OF SEED. Thus life is not symbolically lost, and therefore lesbianism is not prohibited in the Bible.

My argument ostensibly can be countered by a more comprehensive biblical injunction. The very first commandment, given to Adam and repeated to Noah, is “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth” (Genesis 1:28 and Genesis 9:1,7). The descendants of Noah–the entire human race–are duty-bound to fulfill this commandment. But the truth is that we have not only filled the earth, we have over-filled it. This does not mean, however, that the commandment should be thought of as no longer in force–especially among Jews, who have lost a third of their members in our lifetime. I recall an incident during a premarital interview from the early years of my rabbinate. The starry-eyed bride declared her noble intention to have twelve children to compensate for the tragic loss of six million killed in the Holocaust. I gasped, “Must you do it all by yourself?”

I have since come to regret my flippant reply. This couple regarded their forthcoming marriage as a sacrament not just between themselves, but with the >Jewish people. The problem has worsened for American Jews. Because intermarriage is rife and the Jewish birth rate is low, American Jewry, once at zero population growth, has dipped into the minus column. Were it not for a steady stream of converts, the extinction of American Jewry would be even more imminent. For us the divine command, “Be fruitful and multiply” is truly in force.

To Jewish homosexuals I offer an unoriginal solution. As compensation for your loss of seed, adopt children. Although adoption was practiced in the ancient world (as attested in Babylonian law), there is no Biblical procedure or institution of adoption. As a result the institution of adoption is absent from rabbinic jurisprudence. Yet there are isolated cases of a kind of pseudo-adoption in the Bible. For example, Abraham, long childless, complains to God that Eliezer of Damascus, his steward, will inherit him (Genesis 15:2). And barren Rachel beseeches her husband Jacob, “Here is my maid Bilhah–go into her that she may bear on my knees and that through her I too may have children” (Genesis 30:3). Adoption is certainly a possibility today.

Lesbian couples have an additional advantage. Not only do they not violate biblical law, but through artificial insemination each can become the natural mother of her children.

Thus from the Bible we can infer the following: Lesbians, presumably half of the world’s homosexual population, are not mentioned. More than ninety-nine percent of the gays, namely non-Jews, are not addressed. This leaves the small number of male Jewish gays subject to this >prohibition. Arthur Koestler’s suicide NOT a Mossad operation

Recently, in a number of emails coming across my desk screen, I have read statements accompanying articles on Arthur Koestler’s 1976 book, The Thirteenth Tribe, claiming that Koestler was murdered (or “suicided”) by the Israeli Mossad for having revealed the information contained in his provocative and unsettling book on the origins of the Kazar Jews, better known as the Ashkenazim.

This assertion, on the part of whomever started spreading the rumour is, according to the information contained in the Introduction to Koestler’s final autobiography, Stranger on the Square, and published posthumously by Arthur’s longtime friend and literary executor Harold Harris in 1984, clearly erroneous. As to why such a falsehood would be foisted upon Internet readers is another story and one possibly explained by the author of the said rumour who I am unaware of at this time.

Those who have studied the Jewish Question in any depth will be familiar with the complex aspects of this particular group and how they tend to present to the Gentile world a multi-faceted story of their origins and their mission in life so as to both promote and shield themselves from public scrutiny as they continue manifesting their ultimate, fundamental agenda of global hegemony in all spheres of political, financial, social and cultural endeavours.

Now, lest those who wish to believe this rumour about the Mossad start to think that I’m simply making up a defense for this group of calculating Israeli killers and schemers, I want to counter such thinking with the facts surrounding Arthur Koestler’s death as portrayed in the words of Harold Harris and in the process, hopefully, put an end to yet another literary false flag that ultimately could be used to make the anti-Zionist forces look both silly and inept.

The following excerpt comes from the Introduction to Stranger on the Square by Harold Harris of which I have a copy in hand:

“This book is in essence a love story, but unlike any other love story I have read. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a story of an obsession.

It was in July 1949 that Cynthia Jeffries, a pretty but painfully shy and rather awkward girl from South Africa, answered an advertisement. A writer wanted a temporary secretary. The writer was Arthur Koestler. He lived at the time in a house near Fontainebleau with Mamaine Paget, one of the beautiful Paget twins, whom he was later to marry when the divorce from his first wife came through. Cynthia was living in Paris.

She got the job and worked at intervals as his secretary for the next six years, partly in France, partly in England, partly in the USA. During that time she herself was married and divorced. In 1955, she threw up her job in New York in response to a cable from Koestler, and returned to London as his full-time secretary. At what stage they became lovers readers of this book must decide for themselves, but there is no doubt that Cynthia loved Arthur almost from the moment of her first awkward interview with him in Paris.

From that reunion in 1955 their lives were shared. In 1965 they were married. On 3 March 1983, their bodies were found in the sitting room of their house in Montpelier Square which figures in the title of this book. Koestler was sitting in an armchair, a glass of brandy still in his hand. Cynthia was lying on a sofa, a glass of whisky on the table beside her. Each had taken a massive overdose of barbiturates.

Koestler was seventy-seven years old. For the past seven years he had suffered from Parkinson’s disease, which had first been kept under control but had latterly taken its progressive toll. For the past four years he had suffered from leukaemia which, a pathologist testified at the inquest, was in its terminal stages. Cynthia was fifty-five and in perfect health.

To none of us who knew and loved them both did Arthur’s suicide come as a surprise. He was a writer unequalled in his generation for the extraordinary breadth of his genius. Over the years his literary output had been witness to his many-sided imagination, to his intellectual power, and to his extraordinary literary prowess as a master of the English language – in his case, an acquired art. In addition, he was usually actively involved in some campaign and, as this book demonstrates, he led a very full social life. Even though he bore the handicaps imposed by his terminal illnesses with expected fortitude, with unexpected patience, and with his own unrivalled brand of wry humour, no one who knew him anticipated that he would quietly submit to the final removal of his physical and mental faculties. Indeed, on the last occasion on which I saw him (Thursday, 24 February 1983) I felt that he might have left it too late. He was unable to stand, his speech was disjointed, and he clearly found it difficult to concentrate on what was being said to him. I felt that he might not last the night and I begged Cynthia to send for me if she needed help. Next day she told me on the phone that Arthur seemed a good deal better and had told her that he had been hallucinating when I was there. But he was unable to speak on the telephone and Cynthia had to cancel their appointments for the weekend.

As has been widely reported, he was vice-president of the Voluntary Euthanasia Society, and the news of his death on 3 March was not unexpected. The finding of Cynthia’s body at the same time, however, was not merely unexpected but came as a profound shock to all their friends. I do not think it had occurred to a single one of them that she intended to take her life at the same time as Arthur.

When did she make this decision? And why? These were the two questions we asked each other, blaming ourselves for not having foreseen it, for not having intervened in some way.

So far as the first question is concerned, we know that when Arthur wrote his farewell note ‘to whom it may concern’ in June 1982, there was no intention whatever that Cynthia would join him on his final journey. (He had written: ‘What makes it nevertheless hard to take this final step is the reflection of the pain it is bound to inflict on my few surviving friends, and above all my wife Cynthia.’) It is my belief that she had not considered doing so when I saw her on 24 February nor when I spoke to her on 25 February. All the evidence is that they took the fatal dose on 1 March, and I believe (although there is no proof) that Cynthia made her decision either on that morning or during the night of 28 February – 1 March. We do know that that it was on the morning of 1 March that she took her beloved dog, David (a twelve-year-old Lhasa Apso), to the vet and had him put down, giving as the reason that she could not look after him properly any more as she had to spend all her time caring for her sick husband. (She told their cleaner that she had given David to a friend. The 1st March was a Tuesday, and the cleaner did not go to the house on Wednesdays.)

In a brief typewritten addition to Arthur’s farewell note which I have quoted, Cynthia wrote: ‘I should have liked to finish my account of working for Arthur – a story which began when our paths happened to cross in 1949. However, I cannot live without Arthur, despite certain inner resources.’

I believe that this realization was borne in upon her when she knew that the day had actually arrived when Arthur could no longer tolerate the burden of existence.”

Tsilhqot’in chiefs protest Prosperity mine

Dozens of protesters held up signs on Highway 97 between McLeese Lake and MacAllister Thursday afternoon to show their opposition to the destruction of Fish Lake should Prosperity mine be built.
Among those protesting were Xeni Gwet’in Chief Marilyn Baptiste, ?Esdilagh Chief Bernie Elkins, Tl’esqox Chief Francis Laceese, Ulkatcho First Nation Chief Allen Louie, and Lhtako Dene Nation Chief Geronimo Squinas.

They, as well as members from First Nations communities and their supporters, displayed messages such as “Our lakes and our rivers are our life, Our elders won’t gather at a mine site, Our pristine lakes are the heritage for our children and grandchildren, You know you hit rock bottom when you’re a miner,” and “Water is more precious than gold.”

They were also protesting the B.C. government’s recent decision to grant Taseko Mines Ltd. an environmental assessment certificate for the mine following the provincial review process that was completed.

A federal panel is still reviewing the mine project and will hold public hearings beginning March 22 in Williams Lake.

If built, the copper-gold mine would be built about 125 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake at Fish Lake (Tetzan Biny), which First Nations chiefs say is sacred and in the Tsilhqot’in declaration of rights area.

As part of its Fish Compensation Plan, Taseko Mines Ltd. would build a new lake and fill it with fish to replace Fish Lake that would be compromised for the mine.

Laceese, holding a sign that read “Free the Tsilhqot’in you just might free Tibet,” said many Tsilhqot’in members and other supporters were demonstrating Thursday because they don’t want to see the mine go through.

“The land is very vital to our people and where we make our livelihood,” Laceese said. “We want our waters to remain pure for the fish and for our people’s survival.”

He said the protesters wanted to send a strong message to the government and the mining industry that the Tsilqot’in Nation is going to stand firm against the mine.

“We have a lot of allies that will be supporting us right across B.C. and right across Canada,” he said. “Our people are very concerned about this proposed mine and we can’t stand back any longer to let them just push it through and rubber stamp the whole process.”

Baptiste — with signs behind her that said “destroying Fish Lake not the answer” and “blue gold” — said the protesters were trying to get the attention of the world.

“We are looking to save our fish, our waters, the headwaters of the Taseko River and Taseko lakes, which are a part of that wild salmon run that is part of the Chilko run,” Baptiste said.

She said the protest would get more people to realize they do have a voice and that there are First Nations who are concerned.

She said the protesters gathered were a fraction of the Tsilhqot’in people who are concerned about their aboriginal right to hunt, fish, and gather food and medicines.

She added that the B.C. environmental assessment process is “a rubber stamp” process that has never turned down a mine.

Baptiste said a joint review panel process should have been used, not the B.C. environmental assessment process and the federal panel review process. A joint review process, she said, would have included First Nations, the provincial government, and the federal government.

“Through B.C. Supreme Court and our aboriginal rights and title case, this proposed mine is in our Eastern trap line in the declaration of rights area,” Baptiste said, adding that since the Tsilhqot’in Nation has never given up its rights or title, the mine should have been reviewed only under a joint review panel.

“Our land is not for sale, has never been for sale, as we have never entered into the treaty process, and we don’t intend to,” Baptiste said.

Brian Battison, vice president of corporate affairs, said all of the First Nations concerns will be addressed through the federal review process.

“Those questions may be asked and they’ll be addressed in the federal process as they were addressed in the provincial process,” he says.
