The watch was not simply another variation of the iconic travel watch. It reversed the traditional layout, moving the crown and crown guards to the left side of the case while placing the date window at 9 o’clock. Yet on the wrist, the two watches tell very different stories.

The Oystersteel version represents the practical, tool-watch heritage of the GMT-Master. The white gold model transforms the same idea into something far more luxurious and discreet. Oystersteel: The Modern Tool Watch

The Dial Changes the Entire Character

The two Sprites share the same black-and-green Cerachrom bezel, but Rolex made a crucial decision that separates them visually: the dial.

The Oystersteel ref. 126720VTNR uses a traditional glossy black lacquer dial. It creates a strong contrast with the green section of the bezel and the green GMT hand, preserving the watch’s connection to Rolex’s professional tool-watch history.

The white gold ref. 126729VTNR takes a much bolder approach with a green ceramic dial. The matching color relationship between the dial and bezel gives the watch a far more luxurious and contemporary personality.

This change also affects the GMT hand. Instead of the bright green hand found on the steel version, the white gold model uses an 18k white gold GMT hand, allowing the dial and bezel to become the visual focus.

Despite their different personalities, both models share the same technical foundation.

The Oyster: The Idea That Built Modern Rolex

To understand why a GMT-Master II from 2025 still feels unmistakably like a Rolex, it helps to look back nearly a century.

Before Rolex became associated with professional dive watches, aviation watches, and expedition watches, the company’s defining breakthrough was much simpler: creating a wristwatch case that could survive the real world.

In 1926, Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf introduced the Oyster case. At the time, wristwatches were still vulnerable instruments. Dust and moisture could easily enter through the case openings, damaging the movement and limiting reliability.

Wilsdorf’s solution was elegant and revolutionary. The bezel, case back, and winding crown were designed to screw securely into the middle case, creating a sealed environment around the movement.

The name “Oyster” reflected the concept perfectly — a protective shell designed to keep the vulnerable mechanism inside safe from the outside world.

This invention became the foundation of Rolex’s modern identity.

Proving the Concept: Mercedes Gleitze and the English Channel

In 1927, Rolex provided an Oyster watch to Mercedes Gleitze, a young British swimmer attempting to cross the English Channel. During her historic swim, the watch remained exposed to cold water for more than ten hours.

When Gleitze completed the challenge, the Oyster was still functioning.

The achievement became one of the earliest examples of Rolex connecting technical innovation with human performance. The famous newspaper campaign that followed helped establish a marketing approach that would later become common across the luxury watch industry: proving a watch’s capabilities through extraordinary achievements rather than simply describing them.

From Oyster to Oyster Perpetual

The word “Oyster” remains on Rolex dials today because it represents more than a name.
